8th Monday: Jay-Z (Can’t Knock The Hustle)

Would Jay-Z thrive in today’s music scene? How different would history be without Jay-Z? Tensions rise in this discussion.

I’m not a businessman; I’m a business, man! – Jay-Z

The Greatest MC Alive? Hailing from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4th 1969. He has 13 studio albums and the husband of Beyoncé. He owns the music streaming service TIDAL, the 40/40 Club sports bars, co-creator of the clothing line, Rocawear. Don’t forget, he is the co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, former president of Def Jam Records, founder of Roc Nation and Roc Nation Sports.

With a career over 20 years, Jay-Z has done it all and he still might not be done yet. He’s gone from running the streets to running multiple businesses, while still finding time to raise a family. Whether you like him or hate him, you can’t deny the impact his career has made.

Would He Thrive In Today’s Market?

Had he been born a millennial, would Jay-Z be able to “Justify His Thug”? Could he compete with Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Drake? How different would Reasonable Doubt or The Blueprint sound? Would it feature Migos?

What about all the rap beef? Who would fight Nas and Prodigy or LL Cool J? Who would Big L feature on his freestyle? Between Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes, DMX and Ja Rule, would run New York with Jay-Z around? Would Kanye West come about? Would Beyoncé’s career be different?
